Granulated blast furnace slag (in common parlance - granshlak) differs from a blast furnace slag. Blast furnace slag, after pig iron smelting, is poured in molten form from the blast furnace and then cools down in dumps. Blast-furnace slag is the same blast-furnace slag that goes to granulation.


There are 3 types of blast furnace slag granulation - dry, semi-dry and wet. On the territory of the former USSR, blast-furnace granulated slag is obtained mainly by the wet method, which is why the slag after granulation can contain up to 18-20% of water.


Drying drum for drying granulated blast furnace slag, must be aggregated with a heat generator  operating either on gaseous fuel (natural gas, propane-butane mixture), or on liquid (diesel fuel, fuel oil, various synthetic boiler / furnace fuels, water-coal fuel), or on solid (wood-burning furnaces, coal furnaces, multi-fuel (operating both on pellets, briquettes from wood raw materials, agricultural raw materials, and on wood chips, firewood, coal - drill, anthracite, coals of grades D and D), pulverized coal injection installations).

Heat generators operating on natural gas are the easiest to maintain and technologically advanced. They can be fully automated and do not require constant monitoring. The only drawback is the cost of natural gas in Ukraine. The cost of drying is 1.5-3 times higher than when working on solid fuels or liquid (synthetic furnace fuels, pyrolysis products of tires, oils).


The most significant savings can be achieved using solid fuel heat generators. Among them, the best price / cost ratio * technological effectiveness is possessed by a pulverized coal-fired heat generator. And the most economical will be a heat generator operating on briquettes from sunflower husk and also on brown coal (pieces of 20-100 mm).


However, they have significant disadvantages .

  1. So, for example, all solid fuel heat generators require a stoker for timely fuel supply and ash removal. When using a wood-fired heat generator, it is necessary to constantly monitor the moisture content of the incoming firewood, otherwise the required  thermal power for the drying process will be impossible. You also need a permanent warehouse for firewood with a week's supply, if you do not have a nearby permanent source of firewood and a firewood preparation area (unloading, sawing, sorting). For example, for a heat generator with a capacity of 1-1.5 MW, the required amount of firewood is 25-37 cubic meters. per day, which is equivalent to 1 truck. But for example brown coal will need 2-2.5 times less. Thus, it turns out that, depending on the wishes and needs of the customer, the type of heat generator used is not always obvious. Sometimes it is more expedient to install a heat generator that runs on diesel fuel, or on natural gas and not have unnecessary trouble.  

  2. Also, in addition to the heat generator, for the operation of the drying drum,  a smoke exhauster , which provides suction of the necessary air for combustion, its passage through a drying drum, a cyclone and the evacuation of moisture evaporated from ores. For each capacity in tons per hour, taking into account humidity at the inlet and outlet of the drying drum, rheological properties of slag, porosity, etc., a smoke exhauster is specially calculated, designed and manufactured with the required parameters.

  3. The third necessary element for the correct conduct of the slag drying process is the presence of a dust-precipitating cyclone . Dry granular slag is not a very dusty material, and therefore dust cleaning systems here will not be super-large, both in size and in cost. The cyclone parameters depend on the performance of the drying drum, the amount of moisture removed from the material, the type of heat generator.     

    Therefore, in each individual case, depending on the configuration, we select the cyclones individually.
